Yesterday, I ate lunch at the Twine Ball Inn. It’s one of a handful of businesses in Darwin, MN, a town whose residence worship an 12 foot twine ball. I’ve had a dream to see the ball and eat at the Inn since I first heard Weird Al Yankovic’s The Biggest Ball Of Twine In Minnesota back in '89.
I’ve made a few trips to see the ball, but the Inn was never open. This time, it was different. With my coworkers at my side, we entered the surprisingly busy establishment. The first thing I noticed was the smell… fish and grease. Oh man, the grease. In fact, I still smell the grease. Do you smell that? Oh God, Get it OFF ME!
OK, I’m a bit more composed now. Really, I have nothing good to say about the place. The burgers were ok, but anything that needed to be dipped in a fryer (about 90% of the menu) tasted like, you guessed it, fish and grease. I had to stop eating my onion rings at one point because I was certain that my throat was closing up. That was a little unnerving. I struggled through and finished my meal. It was a dream realized. More of a nightmare really…
